Summer was born in 1981 and raised in San Antonio, Texas. Until her recent and successful venture into acting she was a prima ballerina, who also studied flamenco and tango. Summer has been dancing professionally since the age of 12.

Acting career
Her acting career began through various commercials and appearing in a variety of regional theater productions. She was probably first noticed by most fans in the Angel episode 'Waiting in the wings' (directed by creator Joss Whedon), where she played a part perfect for her: a classically trained lead ballet dancer (prima ballerina).

After this Summer was cast as Paige Pratt for one episode in Cold Case (Episode 6, 'Love conquers all', of the first season). Due to her perfomance in Angel she was later auditioned and then cast as River Tam for Joss Whedon's new science-fiction / western show Firefly. "In Summer's case, 'Waiting in the Wings' was her screen test," says Whedon, who, of course, wrote and directed the episode. "Summer is extraordinary, and she was so good in that episode. I just love finding these people who've done nothing before, really." Despite rave reviews from all quarters this show was cancelled by FOX after only 13 episodes, but it will be revived as a movie based on the series called Serenity (scheduled for 2005).
